The GreenHorn Tournament
ANYONE of any skill may compete in the Trilogy Challenge (round 1)
Only true Greenhorns may compete in the full day tournament
2018 Date: Saturday, July 28
To play, you need a player pack. To get a player pack, you must register in advance.
Last date to register: July 20 at noon
Traditionally held in late July at Dragan Field, participation is restricted to players who have played in two or fewer organized tournaments OR who have played more than two tournaments but never above the PDGA-sanctioned Recreational division (players with a sub-900 PDGA rating).
Since 2014, the tournament has combined with the Trilogy Challenge, enabling players to get more “bang for their buck” via a larger player’s package, as well as to bring in experienced players to double as mentors for the day. The Trilogy Challenge itself doubles as the first round of Greenhorn tournament.
The Greenhorn Format (Trilogy Challenge edition)
- 8:00AM – 9:30AM – Check in
- 9:30AM – Rules Clinic
- 10:15AM – Round 1 begins (Trilogy Challenge rules)
- ~12:30PM – Lunch Break & Trilogy Challenge Awards
- ~1:30pm – Round 2 begins (Greenhorn only)
- ~4:00pm – Greenhorn Awards
The day begins with a registration and check-in period in which players receive their player’s packages (usually 8:00am to 9:30am). Check-in is followed by a 30-45 minute clinic going over the ins and outs of typical tournament etiquette and rules of play. The first round of play follows.
In round one, all players are restricted to using only the three Trilogy Challenge discs given in the player’s package. Playing groups will be a mixture of true Greenhorns and experienced players who are competing only in the Trilogy Challenge. After the round is a break for lunch as well as the Trilogy Challenge awards for the best scores. The second round of play follows the break.
In the second round, only the Greenhorns are involved in the competition and they are allowed to play with any discs they wish. Many of the experienced players still on hand join groups and play along in a non-competitive manner. This gives the Greenhorns an outstanding opportunity to not only have two hours to pick the brain of a more experienced player, but also a front-row seat to see how those experienced players play the same holes they are attempting to play.
Round two is followed by awards for the best overall (two-round) scores among the Greenhorns.
